If you’re planning to study, work, or settle abroad, chances are you’ve come across the IELTS – the International English Language Testing System. But what exactly is it? Which type of IELTS should you take? And what do those band scores mean?
At Metier Grise Academy, Goa, we specialize in preparing students for success in IELTS, and we’re here to help you start right. Let’s break it all down.
What is IELTS?
IELTS is an internationally recognized test that assesses your English language proficiency in four core areas:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
It is widely accepted by universities, immigration authorities, and employers in countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and more.
Academic vs General vs UKVI IELTS: What’s the Difference?
- IELTS Academic
Ideal for students who want to pursue higher education or professional registration abroad.
✔ Accepted by universities and colleges
✔ More complex reading & writing tasks - IELTS General Training
Required for those aiming for migration, job applications, or non-academic training abroad.
✔ Easier reading & writing tasks
✔ Suitable for PR and work visas - UKVI IELTS
A version of the Academic or General IELTS specifically approved by the UK Home Office.
✔ Needed for visa applications to the UK
✔ Conducted under specific security protocols

The Four Modules – What to Expect
Listening (30 mins)
Four recorded sections with increasing difficulty. You’ll answer 40 questions in total.
Reading (60 mins)
- Academic: 3 long, complex passages
- General: Extracts from everyday documents.
- Time management is key here!
Writing (60 mins)
- Academic: Describe a graph + formal essay
- General: Write a letter + general essay
- Each task tests structure, clarity, and vocabulary.
Speaking (11-14 mins)
A face-to-face interview with an examiner. It includes an introduction, a short speech, and a two-way discussion.
Understanding Band Scores
IELTS scores range from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user). Each module is scored individually, and the average gives your overall band score.
| Band | Level |
|---|---|
| 9 | Expert |
| 8 | Very Good |
| 7 | Good |
| 6 | Competent |
| 5 | Modest |
| Below 5 | Needs improvement |
Most universities require a band of 6.5 or above, while immigration programs may accept 6.0 or higher depending on the country and visa category.
